Information on participating in the 2nd Flussbad Berlin Cup

This year, in addition to the swimming competition geared towards experienced triathletes and open-water swimmers, we are also holding a non-competitive, time-based swim for ambitious recreational swimmers. The task of securing and safeguarding the route – both prior to and during the competition – will be handled by capable partners, most likely the teams at the Berlin branches of the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) and the German Lifesaving Association (DLRG).

GENERAL CONDITIONS (subject to change)

Route/Distance: 1,000 m (2x500 metres)
Start & finish in the water at the southern end of the Monbijou Bridge; turning point after 500 metres at the Lustgarten.

The competition will begin in the water, most likely in groups of 75 to 100 participants.

When registering on the day of the event, participants must pay a starting fee of €10 (discount price, €5*) in cash. Please make sure you have the exact change to pay the fee.

The registration and changing areas as well as toilets and sanitary facilities will be located on the premises of the "Märchenhütte am Monbijoupark" on Monbijoustraße 3, 10117 Berlin.

Participants must go to the Märchenhütte to register and for all other information. There you will receive your official armband that grants you access to changing rooms (separate for men and women), cold-water showers as well as warm and cold drinks and fruit.

* We offer discounts for young swimmers up to 18 years as well as for jobseekers, "Azubi" trainees, students and pensioners. ID is required.

HOW TO APPLY

To apply online to participate in the Flussbad Cup, just scroll down on this page.

The number of individuals participating in the Flussbad Cup is limited due to capacity constraints. We will allocate the official starting spots in the order in which applications are received and approved. After we examine the submitted data, we will send an email containing the registration confirmation and individual start number to each participant. It might take a while for us to process the applications, so we ask for your patience in advance. We will definitely get back to you as soon as we can!

On the day of the event, depending on the number of participants confirmed in advance, it might still be possible to register spontaneously at the last minute on site.

REGISTRATION

Participants must register at the location on the day of the event. When registering, each participant will receive a personalised starter package that includes a bathing cap and an armband that gives them access to the closed-off area containing the changing rooms and sanitary facilities.

Each participant must present a valid ID (German or EU identity card or foreign-country passport) in order to register and receive the starter package.

SPECIAL FEATURES

The Spree Canal runs along Museum Island and is not designated as an official bathing area. For this reason the competition poses a health risk as a result of pathogens in the water. In order to avoid any risks due to possible diseases, the water in the area of the competition will be tested for microbes by a specialist laboratory on two different days shortly before the event. Divers will also search the swimming area for potential objects, hindrances and any additional risks prior to the event. In addition, if there are storms and/or heavy rainfalls shortly before the competition, it is possible that the quality of the water along the swimming route will decrease significantly as a result of the discharge of mixed wastewater from the sewage system. If this is the case, the competition might have to be cancelled at the last minute.
